Sketching with contour
Kay, your sketching from the Swenson workshop inspires me!! After looking at your story page in sketch I did a sketch in the salon from objects in the room. I tried to limit my time spent on each aspect, though I didn't use a timer. I like the way it came out...but I'd like to have a better grasp of how to use the negative space around the subjects to connect the work. This time I drew part of the netting we have holding fresh fruits and veggies...but I ended up covering more of the page than I like. I'd like to transition from one piece to another without being so obvious.
So...the next day we were traveling up the St. Mary's River from De Tour, MI, to Sault Ste. Marie, MI. What a perfect time to do some sketching on the move. What with our going only 7.5 mph anyway...and add to that the current from the river pushing on our bow...I had just enough time to sketch in a few objects. I still would like there to be more space around the subjects. Will work on that. All in all, I like the sketch above better. I was more faithful in it, I think, doing the contour drawing. It gives a flow to the piece that plain ole drawing doesn't have. And...maybe it's that line transition in the first piece that makes me feel it is a unified piece...a composition.

Get Well Card
My friends Mother fell and is in the hospital. I sat down like I used to and painted a little card to take with me when I went to visit. I think it brightened her day a little:)

"Waiting"
An Amish couple were fishing at the wall on which we were tied. She was sitting on a concrete post...waiting.

Castle by the sea
Tiny (2x3) painting. Started out just playing with watercolor. Dabbed off the moon with a wine cork covered in tissue. Then today I worked on it a little trying to make a scene. I think I still need to scratch out some really light parts on the castle...and maybe on the moon.

An oldie...
In more ways than one. This sketch was done in 2013 from an old photo. Loved the look on this child's face. Obviously the photographer was taking too long!

Sketch from visit to Sailor's Exchange
Yesterday we went to the Sailor's Exchange in St. Augustine. The place is packed with items for boaters...surplus and used. There was a big bin of bolts, screws, etc. and it caught my eye.

Picasso sketching
I was in Sue Pink's workshop this week, Mon.-Thurs., and one exercise was to reduce a figure or item to as few lines as possible and still be able to tell what it is. This may LOOK like a billy goat... but it's a schnauzer. ;-)

Waiting on the catch of the day
We've enjoyed watching the antics of the pelicans at the fish station when a boat comes in with a big catch!

Pulling up an old one
Yesterday found us rushing around getting ready for our departure from Sarasota tomorrow morning. This sketch is from my art journal. It was done at home while watching Dexter and looking at items on the bookcase. ;-)

Belated sketch
Kay and I went to Art and Frame of Sarasota Saturday afternoon and came out with all kinds of goodies. One of my purchases was the Ahab pen from Noodlers, a fountain pen with a flexible nib so you can vary the amount of ink that feeds through by the angle and pressure placed on nib. I'm still experimenting...I have the ink stained hands to prove it! Yesterday afternoon I went to the art festival here in Sarasota and was inspired to do the fellow above when looking at the art of two exhibitors, Bruce Holwerda and Vladimir Pailodze. I used the Noodler pen and and ultra fine point Bic Mark-it on top of a grungy acrylic blot on watercolor paper.
